Resume Posting Tips
New Year, New CareerThis year get your Resume selected Faster and More Often on the online Job Boards!!

Here are some important facts about about posting your resume on Job Boards, which will significantly improve your chances that Employers or Recruiters select your resume.

  1. Resumes should be submitted using the job board “apply mechanisms or forms”, this standardizes the resume format, and is easier for the employer to read. If the job board allows, you may upload your resume an attachment or paste in the resume.
  1. Use minimal formatting, style sheets, etc. embedded in the resume (this gums up most corporate electronic scanning systems.
  1. Do NOT use watermarks, headers, or footers for your contact information. This will prevent many electronic scanning or resume uploading programs from reading your resume.
  1. Contact information should be centered or left margined in the top of the resume itself. All contact forms should be included in the same paragraph including, mobile and email addresses.
  1. DO NOT use graphics, excessive underlining, wingding, or other non alphabetic imagery, as this often prevents resume scanning/parsing programs from entering your info into an applicant tracking system.
  1. Do NOT use Microsoft's "Resume Templates" or other fancy and colorful templates, as these often contain excessive embedded objects, hidden coding including as "style sheets", formatting, page and text color, cells, and tables, which will obstruct scanning and employer uploading of your resume for review.
  1. Employer responses: Increasingly companies are only sending a response to candidates in whom they have an interest in setting up an interview. This may be because of the volume of responses they get.
Finally: If it has been more that two weeks without a response, then it may be fair to assume that the employer may not be interested. Try calling the contact person to indicate your interest, and to find out the status of the job.

By Linda Ann Nickerson

CATCHER ON THE SLY

Where is J.D. Salinger? How has he spent the last 40-odd years since his last real publication?

Born on New Year's Day in 1919, Jerome David Salinger was the son of Sol Salinger, a Jewish deli importer, and Miriam Jillich, a Scottish/Irish Catholic mother. Both sets of grandparents had balked at the union of his parents. As such, the young Salinger's life was conceived in conflict, which he carried with him as he matured.

How to decide when to travel

By Charlotte Bellamy

Travel offers some of the most fantastic opportunities and experiences in life. However, so many decisions need to be made regarding when to travel. Initially the "when to travel" question made me think about the best time of year to travel, however, consider some other factors; the best time in "life" to travel, and the options during the week or even during the day. If you stop to think about all the choices you have, the decision of when to travel becomes a complex one.
