What not to feed to your pet bird

by David Dewitt

Bird owners often enjoy a great deal of interaction with their birds. Birds are incredibly social animals and they love interaction with people. One of the things that most parrots and other larger birds enjoy is eating with their owners. It can be a great deal of fun feeding a pet bird during mealtime but foods that are perfectly safe for human consumption can be hazardous or even deadly to your pet bird. There are a number of foods that should never be given your pet bird.

Chocolate

While you might be a chocolate lover, your bird most certainly is not. Chocolate can effect the digestive tract and can eventually damage the central nervous system which leads to death. Chocolate is also harmful to dogs and cats. The relatively small size of birds only increases the danger of poisoning. Even a small amount of chocolate can be deadly to your bird.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a favorite appetizer, salad topping, or pizza topping. We often forget that mushrooms are a form of fungus. Mushrooms can kill your pet birds by producing problems in the digestive tract. Various parts of the mushroom can live failure in birds. Keep your birds away from mushrooms.

How to attract birds to your backyard

by Pamela Kay

If you're into backyard bird watching and want to attract different birds, you can start by learning what the different food and nesting preferences are. There are many sites on-line, which you can find by typing the name of the bird you wish to attract into the search box. The best site is The Audubon society.

Creation of habitats for birds is much needed. Every year, as the number of destroyed and cut forests grows, more and more birds die from lack of a suitable habitat for nesting and/or feeding grounds. Like humans, they are more prone to disease if they do not eat the foods they need. In your own back yard, you can help by taking a few easy, low-cost steps.

My Mother and I practice all of these ideas in our one-acre back yard. We have enjoyed watching a family of red headed woodpeckers reproduce for seven years. Each year we plant for the hummingbirds and always hold our breath when the first one graces our garden. You too can attract birds to your backyard and become an avid bird watcher.
